On Wednesday, 7th & 8th grade JAG students had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Polk County courthouse to explore the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Safety career field. Students were able to: Listen and observe court cases in real-time, identifying differences between arraignments, sentencing, status hearings, pretrial hearings, divorce cases, and protection order cases. Not only were students able to learn about the different components of a courtroom, but they were also able to build a better understanding of what happens when the law is broken and how it impacts the individual’s life and others’ lives around you. Hear from multiple attorneys that specialize in different fields of law, why they love that area of law, how their job impacts their work-life balance, and the impact their role has on their communities. Many of the attorneys mentioned that having good grades and working hard will open doors in their future, and although being a lawyer is a lot of work, it is incredibly rewarding! Students got to speak with the district court Judge and district court reporter about their roles and responsibilities. Students had time to ask the Judge questions, such as, “What is the craziest case you’ve ever had?” and “How do you know when someone isn’t being truthful about what happened?” Students were also able to view the computer of the stenographer, understand how many words a minute she can type, how the keyboard works, and how she is able to type every word said in the court room. The students were amazed by her ability to successfully do her job! Students participated in a mock trial about SpongeBob. Students got to volunteer play different roles, like a judge, defendant, plaintiff, bailiff, witnesses, and more. The remaining students were able to be the jury! After the hearing about the issue at hand, hearing from witnesses, the jury had to deliberate and decide whether SpongeBob should be awarded $100 for “emotional distress.” The students decided that SpongeBob was in the right, however, would only be awarded the original cost of the circle pants (instead of square pants) he received by mistake. Students got to hear from the Clerk Magistrate about her role in the courtroom, ask her questions, debrief about the cases we heard earlier, as well as ask her about her experience thus far in this career pathway. She told us about some historical cases that were quite big in Polk County back in the day. Lastly, we got to tour the old jail, located in the courtroom, as well as the see the Judge’s chambers. We were able to view the bathroom and itty-bitty bathtub, which Judge’s utilized in the past when horse and buggies were our only means of transportation! Students were given many compliments on their respectful behavior during court, which was a long time for these kiddos to sit and be quiet! This field trip could not have gone any better, and we will for sure be participating in this opportunity in the future. Huge kudos to everyone who helped to make today a success!
