Random Student Drug Testing at Osceola

Beginning January 2020!

December 18, 2019

At the December meeting the Osceola Board of Education took action to implement Random Student Drug testing for students, grades 7-12, participating in school activities.  The number of schools moving to a form of drug testing to maintain the integrity of their school activities has increased. The board felt offering students another way to say no to peer pressure could help deter them from ever trying any type of illegal substance.   Providing parents with an extra resource to help monitor their children in an age where drug abuse has become a major problem, especially among teens and younger students, can be very helpful. This is not a nail them and jail them program and the district is hoping there isn’t a single positive test.  However, if a positive test should happen, the consequence from the schools policy is to sit out of all the activities they are involved in for a specified amount of time. In addition, we will encourage students to participate in drug and counseling classes to improve the student’s knowledge of the negative effects drugs have on their bodies.  It is not mandated that students be a part of the testing pool. However, in order to participate in school sponsored activities, parents must sign a release form that places students in the testing pool. The district will use the services of Sport Safe, a national testing service with a positive track record, to implement the testing with intervals being determined by the district administration.  The process is minimally invasive and is completely conducted by experienced and trained individuals. Sport Safe comes highly recommended by other state schools such as Central City and Fairbury Public Schools. If you have students in grades 7-12 and have an email on file with the school you should have received a brochure with answers to many questions. Click here for a the brochure.  The start of this program begins with a mandatory student and parent meeting on January 6th, 2020 at 6:30 pm for all students grades 7-12 who want to be involved, or are currently involved in activities. At this meeting parents will be asked to sign a release form allowing their child to go into the testing pool and continue to be involved in extracurricular activities at Osceola Public Schools. If parents can’t make the meeting they can sign a release form at the MS/HS building prior to January 10th, 2020 so their students can continue in current activities.  You can also click here to download a release form.
